How to define the account name?

On this page, you will find guidelines for WhatsApp account names that will be reviewed by the Facebook team. Estimated reading time: 05 minutes

All display names must be related to the business and must not violate WhatsApp's business policies.

Display names must comply with our guidelines for sending messages using the WhatsApp Business API or qualifying for official WhatsApp business accounts.

Below are five basic principles to consider for display names:

1 - Principle: Policy Compliance

A display name must not violate WhatsApp's business policies. Here's an example from a store selling wine glasses:

  • Accepted: ABC Wine Glasses
  • Not accepted: ABC Wines

2 - Principle: Accurate Representation of the Business

A display name should represent:

  • A business or the service it provides, the product, or the department.
  • A trial or demo account that maintains an association with the business (e.g., Fresh Products Ltd. Trial).
  • A government-affiliated organization. Requires WhatsApp team approval.

A display name MUST NOT be:

  • A person's full name.
  • A generic term (e.g., fashion).
  • A generic geographic location (e.g., New York).
  • A slogan or long description.

3 - Principle: Consistency with Branding Elsewhere

A display name must align with the branding used elsewhere (e.g., the company's website). An example for a product line called "Fresh Cold-Pressed Fruit Juices":

  • Accepted: Fresh Cold-Pressed Fruit Juices (as it appears on the company's website)
  • Not accepted: Fresh Fruit Juices (branding changed by removing "cold-pressed")

4 - Principle: Clear Relationship with the Business

A display name must have a clear relationship with the business (it must be present on the company's website or in external media references). For example:

  • Accepted: Name of a charity mentioned on a nonprofit organization's website
  • Not accepted: Name of a charity not mentioned on external websites

5 - Principle: Correct Formatting

1 - A display name must have consistent and grammatically correct capitalization and should not use words in all uppercase letters, except for acronyms. For example:

  • Accepted: New Computers City
  • Not accepted: NEW COMPUTERS CITY

2 - It must use consistent spacing. See the example of a company called "Lil’Cupcakes":

  • Accepted: Lil’Cupcakes
  • Not accepted: Lil ‘Cupcakes (an extra space (' ') has been added and differs from the external business name)

3 - You must not use additional punctuation.

4 - You must not use emojis.

5 - You must not include character symbols like trademark designations.

6 - It must contain at least 3 characters. See an example for the company "KT Sir":

  • Accepted: KT Sir
  • Not accepted: KT

7 - You must not use URL formatting

Note: These rules do not apply if a business or organization already uses the brand in this manner.
